How these dates affect deadlines

When a filing deadline lands on a holiday or a weekend, the rules usually move it to the next day the court is open; deadlines counted backward from a hearing move earlier. The deadline calculator applies this table automatically and shows each step with the rule text.

Every full day designated as a holiday by Section 6700 of the Government Code, including that Thursday of November declared by the President to be Thanksgiving Day, is a judicial holiday, except the date corresponding with the second new moon following the winter solstice, or the third new moon following the winter solstice should an intercalary month intervene, known as “Lunar New Year,” the 15th day of the month of Kartik in the Hindu lunar calendar of each year, known as “Diwali,” April 24, known as “Genocide Remembrance Day,” September 9, known as “Admission Day,” the second Monday in October, known as “Columbus Day,” and any other day appointed by the President, but not by the Governor, for a public fast, thanksgiving, or holiday. If a judicial holiday falls on a Saturday or a Sunday, the Judicial Council may designate an alternative day for observance of the holiday. Every Saturday and the day after Thanksgiving Day are judicial holidays.

Judicial holidays = every Saturday and Sunday plus the Gov. Code 6700 holidays that CCP 135 does not exclude, plus the day after Thanksgiving. CCP 135 (amended eff. 2026-01-01, AB 268) EXCLUDES Lunar New Year, Diwali, Genocide Remembrance Day (Apr. 24), Admission Day (Sept. 9), and Columbus Day (2nd Monday Oct.); courts are OPEN those days. Good Friday (noon to 3 p.m. under Gov. Code 6700(a)(19)) is not a 'full day' and is not a judicial holiday. Gov. Code 6700 was amended eff. 2026-03-26 (AB 2156); the fetched text lists 'March 31, known as “Farmworkers Day.”' Weekend observance: CCP 135 lets the Judicial Council designate an alternative day when a holiday falls on Saturday or Sunday; the observed dates below are those published by the Judicial Council on courts.ca.gov. Where a holiday falls on Saturday and no alternative day is listed (e.g., New Year's Day 2028 falls on Saturday, and courts.ca.gov lists no Dec. 31, 2027 closure), the Saturday itself is already a non-court day. Dates marked uncertain=true conflict between the statute and the courts.ca.gov list: for FORWARD deadlines treat an uncertain day as a court day (do not extend); for BACKWARD deadlines treat it as a holiday (move earlier). Court-specific closures (CCP 12b) are not included.
